Tour Plan

We begin by driving from Mekelle to Dodom, located at the base of Erta Ale volcano. The journey takes about 5 hours, passing through a rugged landscape of lava fields, rocks, and sand. After arriving in Dodom, we’ll have an early dinner, then start the 3-hour trek to the top of Erta Ale. Camels will carry our camping supplies. Once we reach the volcano’s rim, you’ll spend the night watching the spectacular lava activity. Erta Ale is a shield volcano with a large crater, offering one of Ethiopia’s most exciting natural attractions.

We wake up early and hike back to Dodom, arriving by 8:00 am for breakfast and some rest. Then, we drive 100 km to Hamad Ela, a small village of about 500 people. Along the way, we’ll enjoy a picnic lunch under the shade of palm trees. In the evening, you’ll see camel caravans and enjoy a beautiful sunset by Lake Assale, a shallow salt lake.

In the morning, we’ll drive to Ragad (Asebo), where locals mine salt. You’ll see how they cut the salt into rectangular blocks and load them onto camels. Next, we’ll head to Dallol to explore the unique volcanic landscape, including colorful formations, Lake Assale, salt canyons, and camel caravans. After lunch in Hamad Ela, we’ll drive back to Mekelle.
